If you’ve always wanted to see the beauty of New Zealand but don’t feel like taking such a long walk across the country without access to modern conveniences, the Great New Zealand Trek might be just the thing for you. It’s a week-long adventure through some of the best parts of the country that combines the fun of being a wilderness traveler with the relaxation of camp sites that have more amenities than many hotels do.
The tradition of this trek first started in 2006 and has been growing in popularity ever since. At first, New Zealanders were attracted to it for the challenge it presented and the fact that it raised money for Multiple Sclerosis. Now, people from all over the world are coming so that they can see the country and help with the charity as well. The journey is made via horseback, bicycle or your own two feet, however you choose to go.
The country is divided into 12 stages, each event covering one stage. Events happen throughout the year, so if you want to see more of the country you can just join in on another stage later. You can choose to cover as much or as few of these stages as you’d like, but if you want the full experience, you’ll need to keep coming back for more. After seeing New Zealand up close, you might not be able to say no to returning.
After a day’s journey is completed, everyone settles into camp for the evening. These camps are truly spectacular and those staying in them will enjoy great food, hot baths and showers, a bar, a café, live entertainment and even massage therapists are available if needed. When the morning comes, the camp is packed and transported to the next location while the travelers continue with the next day’s trekking.
The unique nature of this event makes it perfect for young and old alike. There’s even a shuttle available for people who get too tired along the way and need a more modern form of transport. The Great New Zealand Trek offers people the opportunity to see the country’s natural landscapes while always having the option to step out if needed. The next event covers Stage 8 and is coming up from February 23rd to March 3rd.
