Goa’s Sunburn Music Festival

India’s largest music festival brings electronica to the masses

The Sunburn Music Festival is the biggest music festival in India and one of the largest in all of Asia.  Each year this three-day event comes to Candolim Beach at Goa during the winter and as a more recent addition Mumbai hosts another Sunburn event during April.  More than 100,000 people come from around the world to experience this gigantic event filled with great music, entertainment and food.  Sunburn is listed by many as one of the top ten music festivals in the world.

Those who attend Sunburn, or “sunburners” as they’re sometimes known, are of all ages and nationalities.  Plenty of Indians attend, but the reputation of the festival is such that many who attend on a regular basis are from all across the globe.  The fun, party atmosphere set in the beauty of India has an appeal that brings people back to Sunburn year after year.

There are three stages at Sunburn, each featuring a selection of bands that play all day long on each of the three days.  The focus is electronic music, featuring DJs that are about half from India and half from other places in the world.  More than 40 artists perform each year, many of them world-renowned electronic musicians.  House, trace, dubstep, drum and bass and several other subgenres are represented at Sunburn.  They play from around noon until 10 p.m. each day and once the sun has set the party continues indoors at a variety of other venues.

In addition to the music Sunburn is known for having many other things to keep attendees occupied.  There are sporting events, a massive market for shopping and a wide variety of food, as well as all the local sites that one can take in either before, after or while taking a break during the festival.

This year, Sunburn Music Festival takes place from December 27th to the 29th.  It’s a great way to bring in the New Year while visiting India and a must for all music lovers or those with the willingness and endurance to party day and night for three days straight.
