Here’s one for the profoundly superficial. Travel and Leisure magazine recently released the top seven American cities with “the most attractive residents”. Though the metric for deciding relative “comeliness” in any given city may be as simple as “Hot or Not”, it’s still garnered thousands of hits as people check in to see how their city ranks. To spare you the anxiety, I’ve outlined T&L’s top seven aesthetically pleasing cities (not talking about the architecture) here, and added one of my own.
From the bottom of the list up we have #7, Charleston, South Carolina, who dominated this list last year. Charleston benefits from a fairly low average age and fairly high average income. Translated: young professionals with plenty of disposable income for spa treatments and gym memberships. Honolulu clocks in at #6, with easy living and sun-kissed beaches and that beautiful Polynesian gene pool it’s not wonder. At #5 we have Denver, Colorado, where the some of the fittest people in the country have working hard and playing hard down to a science. L.A., which always makes the list, comes in at #4. What do you expect from a city where it’s customary to get a nose job for your Sweet Sixteen? Miami, Florida, comes in at #3, where the “youth” industry has set up a global headquarters. Miami is also known for being a party nexus, whether you’re on Spring Break or just want to live like you are. San Diego, California, has held on to its #2 spot from last year. Of course, the year-round temperate weather makes it easy to stay fit. Finally, the #1 spot was given to San Juan, Puerto Rico, which in my opinion shouldn’t count, but it’s there all the same. The city swept a number of categories actually, from attractiveness to fashion to street food and friendliness, it’s hard to hate them for being naturally gifted.
I would add one last city to T&L’s top seven, and that would be Austin, Texas. A great mix of southern charm and artistic independence, every time I’ve been there I’m always struck by a the “average” citizen trapsing down the street. From blonde southern belles and rugged cowboys to willowy songstresses and rebels without a cause, Austin, TX has something for everyone. It can’t hurt that they’re also one of the fastest growing tech centers in the world and have one of the largest universities in the country. A mix of youth and money can go a long way.
