Travel Photography
Novice monks- Hsipaw, BurmaI had the fortune to interview Gregory White, who is a photographer based in Seattle. In addition to his work in the fashion industry, he has taken some amazing photographs from his travels. The first part of the interview, which details how Greg became involved in photography initially can be found here. This portion of the interview focuses more on travel photography and social causes.
I know that you have traveled the world and have sold some of your art while donating the proceeds to charitable organizations- What do you think the role of photography is in promoting social causes?
Photography and video are of course very powerful tools for promoting social causes. Photography helped stop the war in Vietnam and has helped make real the destruction of the Brazilian rain forests and the plight of the polar bear. Without images, these stories seem more abstract, and it's so much more difficult to promote abstract situations far away from people without having those visual, visceral realities.
The role of the photographer is to shine a light at the places and situations in the world that need to be seen by a larger majority of the planet, so that enough people will get fired up that they demand something be done about it. We are inundated with so many images every day, so to me taking a photograph that might actually bring something good for the world, something that might make a difference, is my true passion in life and is the direction I want my photography to go.
Here are some more of Gregory White's photographs from his travels.
