California's Trinity County: Alpine Beauty
The Carrville Inn: in Trinity CountyI just got back from a great Northern California road trip through Trinity County, a county rife with natural beauty and expansive scenery. There's even a little history relating to the Oregon Trail, the Gold Rush and westward expansion. With a little help from a friend I was able to do a little Gold Panning, or prospecting. That was interesting and I actually pulled a decent amount of gold out of the river. Not enough to buy a dinner, but interesting none the less. There are countless rivers, lakes and streams including the Trinity River and Trinity Lake. There is tons of hiking and even some fun history, including the Carrville Inn, founded by aspiring Gold Rush entrepreneur James Carr. Having helped build a key trail along the California-Oregon Trail, Carr built the inn in 1854, hoping to attract a Yosemite type situation. Although his Inn was a key stop along the trail, it burned down in 1907 and was rebuilt. Trinity never became Yosemite but the scenery and fresh air make it almost as lovely. The Carr Family cemetary sits behind the Inn. James Carr and his wife Sarah are buried there.
A six hour drive from the Bay Area, and an hour and a half north of Redding, it's a drive, but there are no crowds or tourists. There is ample evidence for the rampant destruction of the environment by mining operations. From tons of rock debris in the rivers to the left over machinery laying in yards. Cabins abound in this area. So find a nice one. I stayed at the Ripple Creek Cabins, which sit nicely between the Trinity River and Ripple Creek. About 45 minutes away was the Etna Brewery, which serves some good beer and food. The peaceful environs and constant trickle of river water washed the stress away, but once you hit cel reception, it creeps back in. Enjoy Trinity County.
